Millstands wear over time due to their environment. Corrosive wear comes from the coolant and lubricants over a period of time. The millstand liner plates, depending on the position in the mill, will last anywhere from five to fifteen years. Once the millstand wears, having proper dimensions of the liners becomes somewhat difficult. As a temporary repair, some facilities will use shimming blocks to attain their correct dimensions.
Another method is to in-place machine the millstand. And with that in mind there is a machinist’s allowance that can be off a few thousandths or up to 10 or 15 thousandths which affects the quality of the steel or aluminum being rolled.
I’ve heard the mill stand has to be taken down for up to 10 days for the machining process and you are still left with a +/- 5 – 20% machinist tolerance. With Belzona you have +/- 0 fit top to bottom, which gives you a higher quality of steel or aluminum in production. The Belzona repair, which takes 2 – 3 days, has been in service over three decades in one of the steel mills we service. We would like to invite everyone to take a look at this cost and downtime saving option for your next shutdown.
Cost savings using Belzona are extremely significant.
